JD: Mmmh… mi piacerebbe interpretare uno stregone malvagio.
If the Cardinals have gone "to the end of the world" to seek a Pope, LARPers team was not far behind. As a matter of facts the project was joined by Jose Dammert, new face of Italian cinema, who has his roots even overseas. Despite of his young age (he is just 23), he has already taken impressive steps in the world of television and cinema, but despite this, you will immediately experience the humility with which he answers to any questions, and this shows a nature that sure will help him in his future acting career.
It is therefore with great pleasure that we asked him a few questions relating to his participation in the LARPers project, finding on the other side not only a frank and clear availability, but also a contagious enthusiasm and, last but not the least, a brilliant ability to observe the Italian media context.
AP: Tell us about yourself and your background. You come from far away...
JD: I was born in Ecuador and grew up in Peru. My parents are both Peruvians, but my grandmother is Italian. I've always been fascinated by the world of performing arts, and in Peru have I acted in four musicals (including "The Sound of Music") and two TV series. Then, when I was eighteen, driven by my love for Italian cinema for great masters such as Fellini and Rossellini, I came here to study acting. It really seemed to me like the best place to nurture my passion. I did not speak Italian, and I read the translations of the works of Shakespeare to learn the language... Imagine: I referred to people using “thee” or “thou” instead of “you”! In short, I used a very courtly language, which perhaps helped me win a scholarship to the YD' Actors Academy, in which I attended a two-years acting course. From there, I started my acting career in Italy, first with some TV series (such as "SOS Befana", in which I interpreted Peter Pan, and "Lola & Virginia"); then, last year, I made my film debut as co-star of the movie “Forget it” by Ivan Silvestrini.
AP: Do you know the world of live acting role-playing games? Do you find any similarity between this world and the world of acting?
JD: I know it indirectly, thanks to my friends who often attend these events. Concerning the analogy... absolutely yes. In order to act, an actor has to play, and this makes him one hundred percent a role player.
AP: Can you give us a preview of Danny, the character you play?
JD: This question puts me in trouble because Danny is a character really full of surprises and I don’t want to anticipate any of them to you! It's a young role player who hides a secret, I cannot tell you anything else.
AP: LARPers blends three different genres together: fantasy, thriller and comedy. Which of these three genres do you feel closest to you and why?
JD: Can I talk about all three, right? Well, I've never been particularly fond of fantasy, although virtually all of my friends are nerds. I've always been a sorto of “black sheep” of the group, the one who fell asleep during the marathon of the three films of "The Lord of the Rings"... what a shame! However, I must admit that this new experience in LARPers is making me finally know and love this universe. Thriller is the genre that, instinctively, I feel closest to me. I have always been attracted by dark atmospheres, and I must confess that my dream is to play in an horror movie! Well, I'm fascinated by the mystery. About comedy, I can say that it is definitely the area I know best. All my past experiences as an actor had a light tone, so it's a genre that I learned to handle more than others. In this sense, I feel I love it and I'm really glad that I can still experience in this field thanks to this new project.
AP: What do you think of the world of the Internet and new possibilities offered by webseries? In what way do you think they differ from the TV series?
JD: I am a strong supporter of the webseries, which are in my opinion a completely free form of expression. Generally speaking about the videos on the Internet, everyone has the opportunity to get involved, to engage in work and to prove it, without being chosen "from above" to do so. The webseries, then, are the future. Just think about the fact that, among the Italian families, is easier to find a computer rather than a television, to realize that the audience of a web series is potentially much broader than the one of a TV series. In addition, the use of the episodes is not related to personal commitments, to a phone call that comes to you suddenly or something like that. You watch the Internet when you can and when you want, without the limit of times of transmission imposed by the TV listings.
A pleasant interview, no doubt about it. Indeed, rather than an interview, a wonderful chat with one of the many people who are giving confidence to LARPers project, putting their talents available to a task which wants to emphasize the willpower of many young professionals. For anyone willing to make a contribution to the production of this fresh webseries, small or large it is, we invite you to visit as soon as possible IndieGoGo, where it is being carried out an intense campaign to raise funds for the financing of the first episode which, judging from the premises - of which Jose is a key element - is shaping up quite juicy.
