I gladly recived Marcello Olivieri invite’s to present LARPers - to protect and play, at the third meeting of “Web ON/OFF”; the apointment for all the authors that have choose the web to tell their stories, organized by SACT-Scrittori Associati CInema e Televisione.
I was pleased not just because Marcello - a screenplayer that I do admire a lot - invited my first hand, or simply for the fact that I appreciate what SACT represent and how. I was pleased expecially ‘cause we talked about nowdays and future issues of audiovisuals, in a very rational, no judgmental way.
Among the guests, beside me, there were Vincenzo Alfieri, author and director, Luca De Dominicis, managing director of Eurogamer.it and Mega Tube, and Michele Bertocchi TV author and community manager of Mega Tube.
Vincenzo was there presenting the webserie “Forse sono io”. It’s not his first time on web, and it won’t be the last. ‘Cause alongside a variuosu number of TV and Movie experiences, he worked in “Stuck” by Ivan Silvestrini; one of those product that the smartest audience will for sure identificate with the breaking point for italian audiovisual on web.Vincenzo is enterprising, pragmatic and with clear ideas on his mind. As Cylons from Battlestar Galactica he has a plan, or to better say, he has a “vision” wich we both share: the firm belief that in a few years web will completly replace traditional television. An auspicable and even forseenable development for digital-born generations, but still hard to understand for italian productors.
Marcello and screenwriter Vinicio Canton have then introduced Luca and Michele, that gotme the moment I saw their nerd T-Shirt. (Yoda and Batman). They face the issue fro Mega Tube point of view, and of the ones who want to be on the frontline on the “last click standing”, or last “Subscribe Standing”battle. If on youtube a “click” means visualization, and a lot of visualization may be considered the distinguish between a succesfull product or a “flop”, that’s not the proper way of seeing hte whole process. The actual difference is made by Subscriptions. That’s becasue subscribers are an audiace we may consider “loyal”, the “hard core” of a channel followers. So, what happens when a lot of “hard cores” get together? It’s what has been done by Italians youtubers who created “Freaks”, but that has been done in USA too by great web stars. They created actual groups we could identify as “factories” of new contensts for a dynamic on-demand show schedule.
So, to make something work on the web are youtubers foundamental? Yes,according to Luca and Michele, but not necessarly in front of the camera. The important things iis that youtubers provide the necessary endorsment to give the nudge to the new audiovisual product. The web gives birth to new generations of youtubers in a no-stippong process.
As a matter of fact, nowdays are Boobs and Kittens to rule the clicks on the web. If a video features Kitten and Boobs together, it’s a bingo. Then there are passing phenomena, such as Gangam Style, or nice exhumation as Mr Trololo. This undergrowth will keep on blossoming and, as meme does, will became viral and entertaining, or disarming, mental or genial, but it will be not enough to satisfy the need of the man to actually tell stories.
Always more users, wich are by the way the old audience, get high quality audiovisual contents directly from web (HBO and so on) and, like it or not, this trend is not going to stop.Let’s try the unglorious destiny of Kodak in the digital era. Sadly in Italy, while Cinecittà is crumbling and none tries to rebuild an audiovisual industry that will generate job and art, and people prefer to talk about FUS and to build a theme-park on via Pontina.
