Eccovi allora l’intervista a Luca De Rubeis:

LDR: All’inizio sì.

GDS: Con ottimi risultati!
LDR: Grazie.

GDS: E poi arriva LARPers.

I have to admit that while I was getting ready for today’s interview I was feeling curious and excited at the same time. Before our telephone call I’ve already heard about Luca and his craft. (pretty much like every italian LARPer), and I’ve already had the chance to take a look at his creations on his Facebook page. I was really looking forward to met this guy with such a wonderful talentwho decided to join the crew of LARPers, submitting his professionalism to the cause. With this mix of feeling I approached the interview. At the end I was not only satisfied, but very surprised. Luca, despite his young age, is a guy who made a strong point in his talent. When he talks about what is a passion, before being a job (for his own admittance), you can feel he’s talking about something that he really knows, that his familiar to him.Nontheless when someone grants him a more than deserved compliment his response is genuine humble. The kind of answer that makes you understand what kind of efforts there is behind each and every piece of work he creates. So, let me introduce you: Luca De Rubeis:

Giulio Dal Santo: Luca, where does you passion for leathercrafting comes from?
Luca De Rubeis: At first from my passion for Larping. When I started to play in the local association near Rome, nine years ago, it was usual that people build their equipment by themselves.I started with a friend of mine in crafting some little piece of armour for our characters. Then our friends begin to ask for some leather armor, and so it began.

GDS: And you learn it all by youself?
LDR: At first yes, I learned by myself. After some time I started to grow a real passion for what I was doing, I realize that leathercrafting was much more than a hobby. So I started to look around for suggestions, and advices. I found an old craftman from Rome who gave me some valuable tips about where to purchase materials and tools, aside from practical advice on the art of leathercrafting. When the all stuff became serious I was thinking on moving to Firenze, to study professional leathercrafting.

GDS: And then?
LDR: And then I decided to go, with the support of my family. I moved to Firenze for about a years. There I worked as Leathercraftsman, and I learned new techniques of high lethercrafting, and had the chance to work with different materials. At that point I had to decide wheter stay there and go on working, or come back to Rome bringing my new skills with me to start something on my own. That’s what I’ve done.

GDS: With remarkable results, I dare say.
LDR: Thak you.

GDS: Your production varies from classic leathercrafting, footwear, Larp equipment,to Cosplay. Recently you add to your references the Theatrical Costume realization.

LDR: Yes.I joined the costume crew of a theatrical rapresentation from Alessandro Gassman. Richard III. I made all the leather pieces of the costumes in the show. It has been a wondeful experience. At first I didn’t know how important was this show, I realized it only afterwards. I had the chance to get in contact with a different enviroment, and I learned a lot. Expecially how to balance my creativ approach with guidelines from the director.

GDS: And then came LARPers. How did it come into your life?
LDR: I’ve already heard about the project. Then it was Umberto who get me involved. It was a really chaotic moment for me I had a lot of work to do. Umberto came to visit me in my workshop and told me about the project. The he asked me if I was intrested.

GDS: What convinced you to accept his offer?
LDR: I was curious about all of that. I was intrigued by the idea of get in contact with those new realities such as movie industry and webseries world. At the end I believe the human side will be the most intresting. Im looking forward on meeting a lot of new people.

GDS: In your department, you work with Lalla and Federica, that our followers already know. Can you tell us how do you create a new costume?
LDR: It’s a three heads work. Me, Lalla and Federica has different skills and knwoledges. The challenge is to make them work together in a mutual exchange of information and suggestions. It’s worked pretty well by far. We managed to create a relaxed and peacefull working relationship. Umberto gives us the idea of the character, then we build the costume through proposal and suggestions. We then evaluate them and we proceed to actually create the costume. Sometimes ideas comes by chance. There’s a piece, we will see in the Teaser that has been inspired by a leatherwork I had in my workshop the day LAlla and Federica come here. We elaborate the general ideaa, we looked for references and after quite a numer of modifications it has been done.
(Author’s Note: I saw that costume and it left me speechless.)

GDS: Luca, thank you for this great interview, and for having decided to come aboard.I ‘d like to make my deepest complimento for your astonishing leatherworks. See you on set!
LDR: Thanks to you, and yes, see you on set!

Luca is a real good guy. You can find his works on his website.
