Compagni d'arme

Ci sono amicizie speciali che chi non ha vissuto la guerra - come me e quasi tutti i nati dopo il 1945 - semplicemente (e fortunatamente) non può comprendere.

Una sensazione simile la si prova oggi con i compagni di scuola o quelli di squadra. Come è noto non sono uno sportivo, ma c’è una “squadra” molto speciale di cui ho avuto l’onore di far parte. Oggi si chiama Accademia Romana d’Armi (ARA), ma nel 2001 era la Sala d’Arme Zaknafein, tributo ad un personaggio della letteratura fantastica della mia adolescenza che - con le dovute cautele - comparerei ad un Athos di Dumas o un Alatriste di Pérez-Reverte. Posso dire di aver avuto dei compagni d’arme, quindi, alcuni dei quali oggi annovero tra i miei più cari amici.

Francesco Lodà, il presidente e primo maestro dell’ARA, l’ho conosciuto effettivamente sul campo di battaglia. Solo che le spade erano di lattice; anzi, di materassino e nastro americano. Poi siamo cresciuti (si fa per dire) e siamo passati al metallo, ma lui ha fatto le cose sul serio: dopo la laurea in Lettere ha studiato, sostenuto esami, vinto competizioni e portato la Sala d’Arme a diventare uno dei fiori all’occhiello della sezione di scherma antica, storica e classica della FIS-Federazione Italiana Scherma, all’interno del CONI. A Roma oggi sono attive ben nove sale dell’ARA, con corsi per tutte le età.

A volte la nobile disciplina della scherma si presta alla Settima Arte (chiamiamola così anche sul web), e se c’è una cosa che non ho mai sopportato nei film storici sono gli scontri armati privi di ogni fondamento filologico. Non importa se LARPers è una commedia con tinte crime: ci sono dei combattimenti all’arma bianca? Devono essere realistici! E quale miglior partner di questa squadra di cadetti di Guascogna può aiutare la produzione di LARPers nell’impresa?

There are unique friendships which those who haven’t lived through the war - as me and almost everyone born after 1945 - simply (and luckly) cannot understand.

A similar feeling is perceived today for classmates or team fellows. As well known, I’m no sportsman, yet there is a very special “team” which I had the honor to be a member. Nowadays It is called Accademia Romana d’Armi (ARA), but in 2001 it was Sala d’Arme Zaknafein, tribute to a fantasy literature character of my teenage years that - with all precautions - I’d compare to Athos in Dumas or Perez-Reverte’s Alatriste. I can say I had brothers in arms, afterall. Some of which I consider best friends today.

Francesco Lodà, president and first treacher of ARA, we actually met on the field of battle. But the swords were made of latex. Actually, air bed and adhesive tape. Then we grew up (metaphorically) and we change with metal. But he took things seriously. After a degree in Literature he studied, had exams, won competition and elevated the Sala d’Arme to become one of the best among ancient, historical and classic fencing of FIS-Federazione Italiana Scherma, within CONI. Nowadays Rome accounts nine active Halls of ARA, with courses for all ages.

Sometimes the noble discipline of fencing comes handy to the Seventh Art (let’s call it this way even on the web). And if there’s something I’ve never fancied about historical movies is those armed disputes without any logical thread. It doesn’t matter if LARPers is a crime comedy. Are there any sword fighting? Then they must be realistic! And who else if Guascogna’s cadets team would be a better partner to help LARPers production on the task?
